A 7-2 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court has effectively legalized online sports betting on the federal level in the United States, a move that some say could be a boon for blockchain betting platforms.

According to Rahul Sood, CEO of online e-sports gaming platform Unikrn, which recently launched a multi-million dollar ICO for their Unikoin Gold (UKG) crypto token backed by billionaire Marc Cuban and well known actor Ashton Kutcher, today’s news is “massive.” Writing on the company’s Discord channel Sood says:

Today’s PASPA news is massive…

Unikrn has become a global esports brand built on cutting edge blockchain and gaming technologies.

We anticipated this day when the Federal Government would finally overturn this archaic law.

Unikrn is ready for the future.

As noted by CalvinAyre.com the Supreme Court’s decision leaves the current state of gaming regulations to individual U.S. states:

On Monday, the Court released its hotly anticipated decision in the case of New Jersey vs. the four major pro sports leagues, the NCAA and the US Department of Justice. By a vote of 7-2, the Court reversed the Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that struck down New Jersey’s plan to permit legal wagering at Atlantic City casinos and state racetracks.

The Court’s decision (viewable in full here) declares that 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) violates the US Constitution’s 10th amendment, which prevents the federal government from ‘commandeering’ the authority of state governments. The Court said PASPA “unequivocally dictates what a state legislature may or may not do.”

The majority opinion declares that “the legalization of sports gambling requires an important policy choice, but the choice is not ours to make. Congress can regulate sports gambling directly, but if it elects not to do so, each State is free to act on its own.”

With the federal ban on sports betting now no longer an issue, gaming companies such as Unikrn and Wagerr have removed a major roadblock for U.S.-based customers wishing to engage in all manner of sports-related betting.
